What Are Asphalt Roofing Shingles?
Today, sloped roofs usually feature shingles composed of several kinds of materials, but the most popular modern roofing material remains simple, versatile, and cost-effective asphalt shingles. This type of roofing first emerged in the early twentieth century, and currently, nearly 70% of all residential sloped roofs consist of asphalt shingles.
Asphalt roofing shingles are available in countless textures and colors at an affordable cost. They also feature excellent durability for a reasonable price, but can still experience damage from major storms, hail and high winds. Building owners should regularly inspect their roofs for damage and contact us right away if you suspect your roof may have been affected.
Shingles are typically made from fiberglass-based substrates and generally feature excellent durability, weight, and a high fire rating. The glass fibers run through a saturation tank that coats them in hot, dense asphalt to make the shingles more impact resistant.
All shingles include a weathering side coated with harder material and specialized ceramic particles that reflect UV rays. They also has a heat-sensitive strip of sealant above the shingle tabs, allowing them to adhere to each other when nailed in a staggered pattern.

Although they share the same basic design, asphalt shingles can come in various styles, ranging from standard dimensional shingles to presidential shake. Ask yourself what the right situation for your property is, then call us for our no cost consultation on how to make your property the absolute best it can be for years to come.
How Are Asphalt Roofing Shingles Installed?
Installation begins with removing the old roofing system all the way down to the decking. We clean off any old debris and remove all nails to ensure a clean canvass for the new system that will protect your most important asset, your home. We then check to see if there is any bad decking, if there is it must be replaced to ensure your roof won’t incur premature damage. Per Colorado building code, if it cannot hold a nail it has no place on your home.
Next, we install an ice and water barrier directly to the decking per manufacturer and building code requirements (Ask us about our 30 year no leak guarantee). We then go over the top of the waterproofing under layer with a drip edge and starter strip sealant at the rakes and eaves for extra protection.
Shingles are then installed over everything in a stair step manner row-by-row. On top of the extra protection in the underlayment, every row of the newly installed shingle will overlap the previous one to result in multiple protective layers across the entirety of your roof.
The installation of asphalt shingles roofing involves many factors beyond merely aligning sealant tabs and nailing a shingle to the roof. For example, a quality underlayment should be installed and nailed horizontally, starting at the bottom of the roof, and work its way up to the top so there are no negative laps.
Some of our favorite installs are completed with a full ice and water barrier installation which comes standard with a 30-year warranty to back it up. This barrier is extremely effective and when combined with other materials, the ice and water barrier will effectively seal any holes in the roof when the sun warms up the sealant bottom coat, making every nail hole watertight all on its own.
This paper serves as a last line of defense against leaks with the help of an aluminum strip that forms a drip edge over the eave to direct water into the gutters. We also recommend including some type of ventilation on the roof peaks to allow heat to escape as well as a rolled water barrier to protect any valleys along the roof.
Nail patterns make a big difference too when you live in an area with strong winds. Our roofing systems are nailed with a 6 nail pattern which boasts a durability to hurricane winds over 100 miles per hour. Most contractors won’t go this far during installation, but we want to ensure our clients roofs can stand easily up to harsh winds for many years.

What Is the Typical Lifespan of Asphalt Roofing Shingles?
Although asphalt shingle roofing cannot rival the longevity of some other materials however, this affordable roofing style has demonstrated the ability to last 15-30 years depending on ventilation, climate, severe weather and proper maintenance. For the price, asphalt shingles are your cheapest option if you plan on selling your home or commercial property in the next 10 or so years but if you plan on staying there forever, there are more cost effective options available for long term use.
Regular cleaning can help building owners extend their roofs’ lifespan by keeping it free from debris that may cause staining by holding water against the roofing. The roof should be inspected and maintained at least once per year to look for missing or damaged shingles.
